Considered one of the strangest unsolved UK murder cases, the 1931 murder of Julia Wallace remains a perplexing mystery... a classic murder mystery...or so many people think. There are those who lean heavily toward husband Herbert Wallace having committed the crime in a quite elaborate manner and others think a fellow named Richard Perry is the real culprit. There are a few who think there is still the possibility that neither man committed the crime. The motive for the murder remains unknown.
The basics of the case are this: Herbert Wallace arrived to place chess at a club in Liverpool and was handed a message from a Mr. Qualtrough who wanted to meet with him concerning business at a particular location. Though he didn't know of this man, but eager for the business, he went to meet him but found the location didn't exist. When he returned home, he found his wife brutally murdered.
Wallace was charged and found guilty of the crime However, the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the verdict and said the jury convicted him wrongly and there was no evidence against Wallace.
So, was the killer really this other man, Richard Gordon Parry? He was quite familiar with Julia and the home and there appears to be opportunity and motive and evidence pointing toward him. However, he was never arrested.
So, who got away with murder? And why?
