Today’s movie/TV car is Herman Munster’s Family Koach from the iconic TV series “The Munsters.” This 19ft monstrosity was the creation of the legendary custom designer, George Barris, who built the original Batmobile, Knight Rider, Greased Lightning, you name it, his name is on it. In 1964, he built this Koach from three different 1927 Ford Model T’s molded together. It took 21 days to bring the vehicle to life, or to “death” I guess, for the Munsters. It cost about $18,000 to build (which was the most expensive for TV at the time) and over 500 hours to hand form the steel and craft the blood-red velvet interior with intrinsic ghoulish features to make it hearse-like. It’s powered by a 3-speed manual, 289 cubic-inch, Ford Cobra V8 engine. All ten carburetors are actually hooked up, and as you will see, it sounds as gruesome as it looks. It's amazing that the show was iconic as it is, because it only ran for 2 seasons from 1964 to 1966. Only one Koach was made for the TV series and feature film. The original one that was screened used is in pretty sad condition. It's been modified over the years a lot of the parts were taken off as souvenirs. After the show George Barris and Dick Dean, his lead designer, built three exact replicas. George Barris was a family friend of the Grams family, that owns Volo Museum. The one your looking at is one of the three that they built, and we got it directly from George Barris himself. It's built precisely as the original, down to the very little details. If you were to park this one next to the original, this one is more authentic. Thanks for watching and if this TV movie car got your blood pumping then tomorrow's gonna get your heart racing. What's a vampire's favorite fruit? A neck-tarine.
