In the last decade, deforestation in Congo has accelerated drastically. Almost a million hectares are lost every year.
These forests contain peatlands, one of the world’s most efficient natural “carbon sinks,” which remove carbon from the atmosphere through plant growth. But if the peat is disrupted, the carbon escapes.
Scientists estimate the Congo peatland contains around 30 billion tons of carbon, the equivalent of 20 years worth of America’s current carbon emissions.
