Montana is full of majestic beauty and scenic roadways, but this has to be right up at the top of the list. The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Route 212) is a 68 mile long road that winds its way from Red Lodge, Montana to Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance.
Located within the beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in south central Montana this All-American highway gives you spectacular views of some of the most rugged and wild areas of the lower 48 states. Because of its high elevation at 10,947 feet the pass is only open during summer months and subject to some of the harshest weather conditions year round.
As you traverse your way up the through the mountains, stop at one of the many pull-off areas and soak in the views! Besides the scenic drive there are numerous trails to hike and over 900 mountain lakes to explore along the way!
Make sure to check road conditions before you plan your travels. At the time of this recording in August 2022 Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance was still closed due to the flooding from June 2022's historic 500 year flood.
