6:32 - Applicable Questions
Have you ever sat down and asked yourself WHY you want to get into medical school? Like I mean REALLY asked yourself that.
For as long as I can remember I've wanted to get into medical school. It initially started out as a little more selfish you know...the money, reputation, financial security...but when I dug deeper there was also this underlying reason of wanting to just be able to provide for my future family and for my parents in the future, I was intrigued by medicine. They have helped me so much I wanted to give back. As a kid, being a doctor seemed like the right choice and so from then on, I made a game plan of getting into med school, and if it weren't for having such a strong WHY I would not have made it this far.
Lesson: you need is to ESTABLISH YOUR WHY
Understand that people are motivated by 2 things:
- the avoidance of pain and suffering
- The pursuit of pleasure and joy
We are 2x more motivated to get away from pain than we are to move towards pleasure.
Pain guides our actions more often than not, and itβs one of the biggest reasons why we donβt follow through with our goals or establish new habits. We are afraid of rejection so we don't say something, we are afraid of failing so we don't try...it's the pain that is driving.
Take Action:
PAIN: Paint a picture visually in your mind or write down what your life would look like if you never accomplished your goals. Imagine yourself on your deathbed regretting having never stood up and taken action.
How does that feel? For me, it really exposes the excuses I've made in my life and makes me want to push past every single one and get working.
Dream/Pleasure:
- What are the great things that you want to happen to your life once you become a doctor?
- Imagine you are a doctor right now, what feelings does it bring to you?
- What you do ultimately aim to accomplish down this path?
PAIN/SUFFERING
- What pain in your life can be minimized or solved if you become a doctor? (financial security, creating an opportunity to help the family financially?)
- What can you NEVER allow to happen to you or your family?
- What pain have you been in in the past, that you absolutely must get rid of?
If the reason why you're doing something is rooted in yourself and pleasure, then it won't be strong enough to support you through the difficult times, you might even get by, but it will make it harder.
That's why you must find someone in your life to fight for.
Because of their sacrifices, I have been able to pursue medicine and get in.
I'm going to include more questions you can think about in the description:
EXTRA QUESTIONS:
- Why do you want to medicine and how is that going to impact your life?
- How is this going to change you? and form you?
- Why do you want to medicine and how is that going to impact the lives of those around you?
- Why do you want to medicine and how is that going to impact the patients you treat?
- If you're a person of faith, how can you serve God through your abilities as a doctor?
These are questions that you have to be able to answer the know the true answer to them. There are going to be very challenging times during the medical journey where you will want to quit. But if you have your purpose for being there rooted in something strong then you will be able to push on through.
Where are you trying to go?
If you work hard for something you don't believe in = stress
If you work hard for something you do believe in = passion
