The movies have been kind to historical pirates, giving the entire practice a sheen of excitement and romance. Sure, pirates were thieves and criminals, but in a charming anti-hero sort of way. In literature and films, being kidnapped by pirates and taken to sea is often a passport to adventure, rather than an invitation to be brutally killed and have your corpse dumped in the ocean. But it turns out that second thing would have been much more likely.
