After he spoke out against the war in Paris, the State Department revoked his passport, trapping a global superstar within US borders for 8 years. They pressured record labels to drop him and scrubbed his college football records. They turned him into a “non-person.”
But when Congress dragged him in and asked why he didn’t just leave if he hated America so much, he gave the ultimate answer:
“My father was a slave, and my people died to build this country, and I am going to stay here and have a part of it.”
They could take his travel rights. They couldn’t take his ownership.
