How did a painting of a dead dog listening to a dead man turn into a disastrous 1993 Amiga video game?
In this video, we dive into the bizarre history of Nipper vs. The Kats (spelled with a 'K', naturally)โthe rare promotional platformer commissioned by HMV. Built to launch their short-lived "Level One" gaming stores and a national high-score competition via Amiga Power magazine, this game should have been a triumph. Instead, it was a recycled Graftgold sprite-swap (originally built for PowerGen electricity workers) that led straight into one of the most chaotic launch events in gaming history.
Join us as we break down the game, the botched Oxford Street launch party (featuring a soft-locking bug and GamesMaster's Dexter Fletcher getting bounced for getting too drunk and trying to shoplift), and how Amiga Power managed to accidentally declare war on the Royal British Legion over Cannon Fodder.
(Not done a GYCW in years, but I thought I'd do this little story on the time the HMV dog got a video game, and down to incredibly bad luck and timing, it's launch was a total dumpster fire.)
And yes, before you ask, I'm "That Guru Larry" that was on TV ๐
