Are you looking for the perfect camera rig for your next documentary project? In this video, I walk you through my complete Sony FX6 camera rig build, featuring a full SHAPE rig setup that I recently used to shoot a hockey documentary across Quebec, Canada.
If you are shooting long days on set, ergonomics and weight distribution are everything. That is why I transitioned from a traditional handheld setup to a dedicated shoulder rig. This configuration not only saves your back during grueling production days but also provides the stability needed for immersive, run-and-gun documentary filmmaking.
Throughout the video, I break down the assembly process step-by-step, starting with the foundational SHAPE cage. A good rig starts with a solid cage, and this one offers excellent mounting points and a seamless base for the rest of the accessories. I also cover the essential components that make this build so functional, including the SHAPE dovetail plate, the highly adjustable SHAPE Viewfinder Mount, and the SHAPE pivoting V-Mount battery plate, which allows for continuous power and easy hot-swapping without interrupting the camera's internal battery.
For audio, I am using the Sony ECM-MS2 microphone, securely mounted to the rig. To keep the setup clean and prevent cables from snagging, I rely on Kondor Blue Mondo Ties for efficient cable management.
One of the biggest upgrades to this build is the integration of the Atomos Ninja V monitor. I discuss why the latest version of the Ninja V solves major workflow issues for Sony FX6 users — with the ability to record directly to CFexpress Type-B cards instead of bulky SSDs, dual SDI in/out ports, and USB-C power delivery directly from the V-mount battery, it is an absolute game-changer for external monitoring and recording.
Finally, I share my real-world experience using this exact shoulder rig setup in the field. Whether you are shooting sports, interviews, or fast-paced events, having a modular rig that can quickly transition from a tripod to a shoulder mount is invaluable.
