In this video, I read from Chapter 9 of my volume A Systematic Theology of the Early Church. We explore how the biblical authors illustrate human beings as mortal, as living souls. Since immortality is given at the resurrection of the righteous, humanity is susceptible to death. The doctrine of the immortality of the soul was not believed nor taught by any biblical author, nor was it believed by Jesus Christ.

Dustin R. Smith, PhD, is a New Testament scholar at Spartanburg Methodist College. His research interests include early Christian unitarianism, high human christology, the Gospel of John, 1–3 John, and the Book of Revelation.
