In the 1980s, scientists discovered a “hole” in the ozone layer, caused by the use of chemicals known as CFCs. The ozone layer provides essential protection from the sun’s UV rays. This environmental crisis led to a massive international treaty known as the Montreal Protocol, which banned the use of CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances worldwide.
