The majestic empire found by Genghis Khan appeared, it seemed, out of the blue. It made a name rapidly, however, conquering Asia and later half of Europe. Although the Mongol Empire had existed for less that a hundred years, this was enough to change the history for many peoples, expanding ones and completely vanishing the others. $Viking Dublin: How the Slave Trade Paid for War Viking Dublin was never just a fortress of conquerors. It grew into one of the largest slave markets in the North Atlantic, and that trade paid for the fleets and armies that held Ireland in fear for two centuries. Irish, Scots, and English captives were sold here into slavery, while silver from the Arab Caliphates and weapons from the Rhineland flowed through the port the Vikings founded at the mouth of the Liffey in 840. Slaving fed the wars, and the wars delivered fresh captives. This economy turned the Uí Ímar dynasty into a power that ruled from Dublin all the way to York. But the Vikings made one fatal mistake. They forced a fractured Ireland to unite for the first time. Máel Sechnaill II stormed Dublin and freed its slaves, then Brian Boru gathered the island under a single crown and set out to break the kingdom of the slave traders. At Clontarf in 1014 the Irish shattered the Viking army, yet Brian paid for that victory with his own life, and the lives of his son and grandson. The island he had united fell apart again within days. The Scandinavians who survived, Ireland defeated a second time, no longer by the sword but by culture, dissolving them into the Gaelic world.
