It's the 80th anniversary of the U.S. dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, an atomic bomb would be dropped on Nagasaki — the center of Catholicism in Japan.
At the time, two priests were hearing the confessions of dozens of Catholics in Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki. They, like so many other civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, would be vaporized in the blast.
The death toll is well known: Roughly 100,000 were incinerated in both cities within seconds of the blast. Another 100,000 would die over the course of weeks, months and years from the effects of radiation.
But even in the midst of the devastation and destruction, God worked miracles.
