"HMS Starfish" is a confusing query for a Mendip Hills Starfish site because the term "Starfish" refers to a WWII bombsight decoy program that mimicked the city of Bristol in the Mendip Hills using lights, fires, and special effects. There are no HMS (Her Majesty's Ship) Starfish connections to these sites; rather, the decoy site was named for the overall program. While the effectiveness of the Mendip site is debated, the Starfish program overall diverted thousands of bombs from actual cities, saving many lives.
