Kristen is Fully Bookd | The Mask of Mirrors non-spoiler review 🎭 Favourite book of 2021 so far? @Kristenisfullybookd | Uploaded May 2021 | Updated October 2024, 11 hours ago.
Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing my review for The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick. This is the first book in the new adult fantasy series Rook & Rose, set in a Venetian-feeling city of Nadežra, a Colonized city full of feuding Noble families vying for power, feuding street gangs, and a 'Batman meets Robin Hood' vigilante called Rook. This is the backdrop for the con being played by Ren/Renata/Arenza - a former street orphan pretending to be the long-lost cousin of a Noble family on the brink of destruction. This book is full of intrigue and scheming, fancy dresses and balls, colonialized city tension, magical mysteries, and the most important question... Just who IS the Rook really? I absolutely loved this book and wanted to reread it immediately after finishing it. It is almost without question my favourite book of 2021 so far. BUT, the magical elements can be a little confusing, it has a huge cast of characters (so notetakers, take note), and the pacing is a little slow and focused on scheming and set up in the first half until stuff starts to explode (including the pace) in the second half. I would definitely recommend this book to people who like high society scheming fantasy, really interesting character relationships and dynamics, and anyone who's a sucker for a good'ol vigilante. Enjoy!
