What happens when some ideas are taken less seriously before they even have a chance to prove their impact?

Research by INSEAD Professor Michaël Bikard and PhD student Ronak Mogra, together with Isabel Fernandez-Mateo of London Business School, explores how gender influences which scientific ideas gain traction in technology development.

Looking at millions of scientific articles and patent citations, the research found that inventors were less likely to build on research led by women, even when the discoveries themselves were similar.

The implications go far beyond representation.

If innovation depends on recognising and building on the strongest ideas, then overlooking certain perspectives doesn’t just affect individuals. It shapes the pace and direction of progress itself.
