The Map or the Territory?
Modern cosmology and physics often confuse their maps with the territory they attempt to describe. What begins as a mathematical convenience — a patch, a parameter, a provisional model — becomes reified into a physical entity or episode. The most striking example is the current “consensus” picture of the universe: roughly 95% of its mass–energy is said to be composed of things no one has ever observed — 68% “dark energy” and 27% “dark matter” — constructs that exist only to keep General Relativity and its extensions viable. And yet this picture is presented as established fact, not as a symptom of equations stretched far beyond their tested range.
