If we change the definition of a word in this one verse just to make it softer, we have to apply that same definition to the other 81 times it appears in the text.
And if we did that, the entire Old Testament would suddenly become incoherent. You can't cherry-pick definitions just because the plain reading of a text is uncomfortable or politically incorrect. Intellectual honesty requires us to accept what the author actually wrote, not what we wish they wrote.
