MIT commissioned Tony Award-winning alumnus Jamshied Sharifi ’83 to compose a new piece of music to open the 2021 commencement ceremony, which was, for the second year, entirely virtual. Sharifi scored the piece, whose lyrics are based on MIT students’ poetry about the pandemic, for the unusual combination of orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, Senegalese drumming ensemble, and multiple choirs. Student musicians recorded their parts separately, then those on campus took part in one of five separate video shoots, four of which were held outdoors. Audio tracks and the videos were edited and combined to create "Diary Of A Pandemic Year."

Special Thanks to Neil and Jane Pappalardo for their generous support.
