Inside The Day That Changed America: March on Washington (Remastered)
The March on Washington
is still the largest demonstration in DC
for human rights, for civil rights.
Singing: “well we are all here black and white.”
People found out about it back in 1963
through fliers like this one.
Its not black
America faces a crisis. Its America.
All of us are facing this crisis.
Loudspeaker: “Freedom now movement hear me.
We are requesting all citizens
to move into Washington.
To go by plane, by car, bus.
Any way that you can get there.
Walk if necessary.
We are pushing for jobs, housing,
desegregated schools.
People took days off of work
to travel all night.
A lot of people would come to Union Station.
And then you were told to walk here
to the Washington Monument grounds.
And this is where you could pick up
badges, pins, banners, signs
that were prepared
and branded for the March.
The man who organized this whole
thing, Mr. Bayard Rustin.
The first demand is
that we have effective
civil rights legislation.
No compromise, no filibuster.
And that it includes
public accommodations,
decent housing, integrated education,
[inaudible], and the right to vote.
What do you say?
These 250,000
people from all over the country.
Its August in Washington, D.C.
its super hot.
Brother John Lewis.
John Lewiss speech,
the draft he presents, is
considered to be too controversial.
And the older gentlemen want
it toned down.
We march today for jobs and freedom,
but we have nothing to be proud of.
For hundreds of thousands
of our brothers are not here,
for they are receiving starvation
wages, or no wages at all.
While we stand here
there are sharecroppers
in the Delta in Mississippi
who are out in the field working for
less than $3 a day?
12 hours a day.
Let us not forget
that we are involved
in a serious social revolution.
We do not want our freedom gradually,
but we want to be free now.
Theres a moment in the program
that says a tribute to Negro women,
but not one of them was going to speak.
There were so many
capable, articulate,
impassioned Black women
who could have spoken
and been rousing and inspirational.
One of them based
right here in Washington, D.C.,
Dorothy Height.
She was there, sitting up there.
A woman ended up
speaking kind of by accident,
a organizer from Arkansas
named Daisy Bates delivers a short
but really impassioned, effective speech.
We will walk
until we are free,
until we can walk to any school,
and take our children to
any school in the United States.
And we will sit in and
we will stand in and we will lie in
if necessary,
until every Negro in America can vote,
this we pledge to the women of America.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Let freedom
ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.
Let freedom ring from Lookout
Mountain of Tennessee.
Let freedom ring from every hill
and molehill of Mississippi.
From every man mountainside.
Let freedom ring and when that happens.
When we allow freedom
ring.
When we let it ring
from every village and every hamlet,
from every state and every city,
we will be able to speed up that day
when all of God’s
children, black men and white
men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants
and Catholics
will be able to join hands and sing,
in the words
of the old Negro spiritual,
“free at last, free at last.
Thank, God almighty,
we are free at last.
From here, weve got this line from Abraham
Lincolns memorial -
the leader who emancipated enslaved people,
held the country together -
to the very first private
citizen ever
to have a memorial in the National Mall.
Was a martyr for civil rights
for everyone,
particularly for black Americans.
And across the Tidal Basin, of course,
as a memorial to Thomas Jefferson,
one of the prime
authors of this founding document,
the Declaration of Independence,
that has this immortal line,
“All men are created equal,”
and yet was an enslaver.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4th.
Japanese cherry trees in D.C.
get to peak bloom
last week of March,
first week of April,
and then theyre done.
The designer got this idea from
the “I Have a Dream” speech.
One of the lines is “out of a mountain
of despair, a stone of hope.”
[Dr. King] “But I think this has been
one of the great days of America.
And I think this march will go down
as one of the greatest,
if not the greatest,
demonstrations
for freedom and human dignity
ever held in the United States. March on Washington: Relive MLKs I Have A Dream](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/guV7uzd0J-o/mqdefault.jpg)
