Track 118: The Boy, the Girl, and the Weapon #6

Kali runs to Kaine, saying that there's something she (Kali) has to tell her (Kaine). However, before Kali reaches her granddaughter, Red Eye eats her.

(cavia seemed to have a thing about monsters eating people)

This is what finally sets Kaine over the edge.

Kaine, as it turns out, is not a normal human. She is the result of genetic manipulation, combining the best attributes of Kali and Grandpa to create the ideal human soldier (and perhaps throwing in a little manipulation of the human genome at the same time). This means that Kaine actually does not have parents (which is a bit confusing come the far future but I assume some wacky Replicant family dynamics were in order), and that Kaine's ridiculous physical ability in the main game is not the result of Tyrann's fusion with her, but from her own innate abilities.

(This is also not a retcon or an ass-pull. If you go back to Kaine's memories, when she attempts to fight Hook, the narrative mentions she engages a superhuman ability to fight, complete with glowing red eyes, before her possession by Tyrann. I actually assumed that was a mistake in-game, but it turns out that yeah, there actually was some kind of reasoning behind it. Crazy!)

All that said, Kaine finally collapses, goes nuts, and begins a berserker attack against the Red Eye, trying to force it to release her grandmother. Nier, still watching from afar, is stunned that a human could fight toe-to-toe against the Red Eye. The rest of the men who have arrived on scene, despite their immediate orders to capture the opposing forces, are all keeping their distance from the battle-- quite intelligently, as Kaine and Emil together are annihilating the Legion forces. Kaine herself manages to fell the Red Eye single-handedly and continues to attack its prone corpse. Realizing her opponent is dead (definitely, definitely dead), she turns her attentions -- and aggression -- on the gathered troops.

Nier, deciding to take some kind of agency over the drama (given that the game is named after him and all), calls out to Kaine and Emil to try and bring them back. He says that they can stop fighting, it's over now, everybody's dead and it's okay. They aren't monsters.

Possibly through Nier's sheer innocent exuberance -- but more likely through sheer coincidence -- the two of them snap out of it.

Note: The Drama CD is exclusively in Japanese. I do not have an English translation, nor have I been able to find one; if you happen to know of one, please tell me and I will gladly post it here.
