On a remote African coastline lies a secluded estuary that has thrived undisturbed for centuries. The area, guarded by conflict during a 20-year bush war in central Mozambique, has only recently become accessible with the creation of a passable road. The lagoon is a complex network of tidal flats, channels, and clear waterways, home to mangrove swamps and sea-grass beds that conceal unique and rarely seen creatures.
Life in the lagoon is governed by the moon and tidal cycles, which bring seawater in and out every six hours, creating a dynamic environment where bizarre creatures have adapted. Among these are fish that walk on land, mud-burrowing crabs, giant slugs that vacuum food, backward-swimming fish, and upside-down swimmers. At twilight, predators like crabs, flatfish, and moray eels emerge, while cuttlefish dominate the night, hunting stealthily among the weed beds.
With the war's end, humans began settling along the lagoon's shores, fishing and exploring the area. This new human presence raises concerns about the survival of the lagoon's unique ecosystem and whether its fragile balance can withstand the impact of human activity.
