The Battle of the Boyne is one of the most significant battles in Irish history. It was a battle for the English throne and was fought between the Catholic king James II and the Protestant king William III. The Protestant king won and as a result the victory is celebrated in Northern Ireland every year, and we all get a day off on 12 July.
But it was really much more significant than that. It secured the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland for generations and was a turning point in European history. But does the Battle of the Boyne also represent a victory over autocratic rule?
