Summary: Learn how astronomers classify galaxies; how galaxies evolve over time. Dr. Sazonova explains the four principal features of galaxies: gas plus dust, a supermassive black hole, stars, and dark matter. Her research is on how galaxies evolve from star-forming spiral disk galaxies to ‘red-and-dead’ centrally concentrated elliptical galaxies. She explains how the gas in galaxies needs to cool so that it can collapse to form stars and how this star-forming process can be quenched, which would stop the galaxy from forming new stars.
