How have political campaigns prepared themselves to navigate the challenges of disinformation in 2024? What lessons have they learned from past elections, and what strategies are they deploying in an age where disinformation online continues to run rampant in the forms of conspiracy theories, memes, and now, AI?
The Institute for Rebooting Social Media is pleased to welcome journalist Sasha Issenberg to discuss his new book, The Lie Detectives: In Search of a Playbook for Winning Elections in the Disinformation Age, which presents a snapshot of a political class working to find acceptable solutions to counteracting mis/disinformation.
SPEAKER
Sasha Issenberg is a journalist and the author of four previous books, including The Victory Lab: The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns, and, most recently, The Engagement: America’s Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage. He is a correspondent for Monocle, and has written for New York, the New York Times Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Politico Magazine. He teaches in the UCLA Department of Political Science.
MODERATOR
Myojung Chung is an assistant professor of journalism and media innovation at Northeastern University. Her primary research focuses on the intersection of digital media, misinformation, and policy making. She particularly aims to understand the spread and consequences of misinformation and develop effective countermeasures, ranging from fact-checking to literacy initiatives to regulatory measures.

The Institute for Rebooting Social Media (RSM) is a three-year, “pop-up” research initiative at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center to accelerate progress towards addressing social media’s most urgent problems, including misinformation, privacy breaches, harassment, and content governance.
