Before East Anglia had saints and monasteries, before its kings were crowned in stone halls or remembered in written law, there was Wehha.
In the shadowed centuries of the sixth age, as new peoples crossed the sea and the old Roman world finally faded from Britain, Anglo-Saxon tradition remembers Wehha as the first king of the East Angles. If he lived — as the records suggest — he ruled as a pagan lord in a time of settlement and struggle, when migrants from Frisia and the southern Jutland peninsula carved out a new kingdom along the eastern shores of England.
This was an age before chronicles, when power was carried by blood and the sword. From Wehha would come Wuffa, his son, who founded the House of the Wuffingas — the royal dynasty that ruled East Anglia for generations, over the lands that would become Norfolk and Suffolk. Under the Wuffingas, East Anglia would rise as one of the great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, its kings buried with treasure, its warriors remembered in legend.
Yet much of their story has been lost to time. The Viking invasions of the ninth century and the dissolution of the monasteries in the sixteenth shattered the libraries where their deeds were once preserved. What remains are fragments — names, lineages, echoes.
One such echo survives in the Historia Brittonum, which names Wehha, father of Wuffa, as the first of the Wuffingas. From this single line, historians trace the origins of the dynasty to the middle of the sixth century, when East Anglia first emerged from the mist as a kingdom.
