Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori died of cancer on September 11, 2024, at the age of 86. A deeply divisive figure in Peru, Fujimori steered economic growth during the 1990s only to later end up jailed for 25 years for human rights abuses. In 2017, then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski pardoned Fujimori on health grounds. The pardon was then overturned by Peru’s Supreme Court only to be restored in 2023. In May 2024, Fujimori revealed he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumour.
