[SPOILERS: The Leftovers]
So this is a follow up to my previous video which went over how The Leftovers subverts “The Mystery Box”. In said video, I discussed the show’s ambiguous series finale and how I actually believe it’s not all that ambiguous. Those of you familiar with the show obviously know what I am talking about, but for those of you who are not, let me catch you up to speed:
The Leftovers tells the story of those left to grapple with the inexplicable disappearance of 2% of the world’s population, an event dubbed The Sudden Departure. Throughout the series, the character of Nora Durst, who lost her husband and two children in the Sudden Departure, resents those around her who are seemingly able to accept and move on from their loss, while she is wracked with guilt and shame.
In the final season of the show, Nora is approached by a group of physicists who state they have discovered a way to transport people to wherever the departed are. Though initially skeptical, Nora eventually agrees to the procedure in order to reunite with her family. But just as the procedure is about to commence, we smash cut to several years later where we find a much older Nora living in exile in the Australian outback.
Ex-lover Kevin Garvey is able to track her down and questions where she has been all these years. Nora then tells Kevin she did in fact undergo the transportation and arrived in an identical world in which the 98% disappeared and the 2% who departed are alive and well. She then states she found her family, but upon seeing them happy together, decided she didn’t belong in this world, tracked down the scientist who invented the machine, and had him send her back, after which she escaped into exile.
So of course the question posed is: is Nora telling the truth? Did she travel to his alternate world? Or did she call off the procedure at the last second? Now in my previous video, I explained how it really doesn’t matter. Either way Nora has made peace with losing her family, thus concluding her series arc.
However, I would argue that not only is Nora lying, but the writers heavily imply so via hints sprinkled throughout the finale and a particular scene featured earlier in the season.

![Seinfeld & The Psychology Of The Sitcom: An Analysis Of Why America HATED That Finale
While you will often see the word polarizing being thrown out a lot in regard to a number of series finales, the finale of Seinfeld really doesn’t fall under that purview as it was pretty much universally hated by both fans and critics. But that leaves the question… why?
Originally this video was simply going to be a breakdown of the final episode, but I’d argue the finale is perfectly consistent with the tone of and a thematically fitting conclusion to the series. So, why did fans react in such a hostile manner?
Well, if you will indulge me in a drawn out, pretentious video essay that touches upon an array of topics from the audience’s deeper relationship with mass media entertainment to Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unconscious, I would be happy to present a theory.

![Reject Modernity, Embrace Masculinity: When Toxicity Is Masked As Positivity
Recently, I’ve been seeing these “Reject Modernity, Embrace Masculinity” videos popping up, a trend, along with its multiple variations, that has seemed to catch on over the past few months and felt compelled to make a short video to discuss.
While the “embrace masculinity” portions are for the most part fine, the reject modernity sections mostly consist of just making fun of fat people and not so thinly veiled homophobia and transphobia. Lets discuss...

(SPOILERS: The Departed [2006], Infernal Affairs [2002])
Some of you may remember my second video ever, entitled “Why The Departed Sucks”. And you may have noticed that I unlisted said video. The reason I did so is because, in retrospect, I don’t think it is emblematic of what the channel stands for today. Now, to be clear, I still stand by my claim that The Departed does in fact suck and believe I made strong arguments, but at the time, as I was still finding my style, I think I was trying too hard to emulate the whole “rage bro” aesthetic, which in turn soured the actual good points I made.
For that reason, its presence on the channel has bugged me for a while and I was torn as to how to address it; should I delete it, remake it? But then I settled on a different idea; in this video I will go over my original review and respond to my OWN arguments, stating where I think they are lacking and fleshing them out in a more constructive manner.

![Cruising | The Danger Of Indifference
[SPOILERS: Cruising (1980)]
I first became aware of Cruising years ago when I was on a vintage Al Pacino binge, catching up on the films of his I slept on (Panic At Needle Park, And Justice For All), but Cruising was the film that stuck with me most… though not necessarily for the best of reasons.
I’ve wanted to make a video on it for a while, but couldn’t narrow down the angle: should I chronicle the insane chain of events that led to acclaimed director William Friedkin agreeing to make the film, explain the protests by the LGBT community that sought to prevent it’s release, maybe discuss the fact the film’s plot is basically incomprehensible, or how, upon the film’s release, its thematic contentions intersected with the current attitudes towards homosexuality and what the consequences were.
And then I was like screw it, I’ll just do it all in one video…

![How The Leftovers Subverts (or Perfects) The Mystery Box

For those unfamiliar, The Leftovers tells the story of those left to grapple with the inexplicable disappearance of 2% of the world’s population, an event dubbed The Sudden Departure. There are so many things I could praise The Leftovers for, but today I want to discuss how the series subverts (or perhaps perfects) what is known as “The Mystery Box”.

![The Inciting Incident | The Craft Of...
Welcome to the second installment of my latest series entitled “The Craft Of”, a crash course on traditional 3 Act Structure which the vast majority of Hollywood films released over the last several decades have utilized.
Todays episode will discuss the first of the five major plot points I went over last episode, The Inciting Incident, which is the moment where your protagonists way of life is disturbed usually due to some unforeseen factor or circumstances.
NOTE: This series is not meant to rag on any particular screenwriting guide you fancy. If it works for you, stick with it. If you DO need a recommendation, go with Syd Fields Screenplay, which Id say is the gold standard.
