Not a hero of great strength nor appreciable speed, you'll find Spring Man was incomparable when it came to oscillating, recoiling, reverberating and bouncing. When sproing, wriggle and shudder were in need, Spring Man...sprang into action. Sprung? No matter! Every rigid tyrant, every solid, sure-footed paragon of stability was oft-found to be looking over its broad, squared shoulder in fear of that coiled outline TREMULANT beneath a flickering street lamp. In the dead of night. Whereupon the moon was full, yet moodily and intermittently clouded over so as to give an eerie sense of foreboding. The ground is also possibly rain-slicked? We're getting off track here. The point is, Spring Man is the hero of the story. And yet, here he stands (precariously so, and often toppling over, bouncing off at odd and unpredictable angles, then rolling about for a bit) to face down his greatest challenge, to battle his eternal nemesis...

I composed this piece for a fascinating instrument I discovered in a dusty, old thrift shop. It looks like some surreal steampunk contraption and produces this haunting tone that had me reeling with equal parts delight and surprise when I first heard it. So I hammered together this arrangement of horn, melodica, cello and other odds and ends that feels every bit as unrepentant in its bizarreness as the instrument itself.
What's the instrument called? Well, that's a matter of mystery at the moment. To be revealed on Thursday! ;)
