It was the end of one of the greatest chapters in space exploration.
On July 8, 2011, NASA launched Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-135, the final mission of the Space Shuttle program. After 30 years of groundbreaking missions, the shuttle fleet made its last journey into orbit, closing an era that transformed human spaceflight.
The Space Shuttle program launched satellites, deployed the Hubble Space Telescope, helped build the International Space Station, and carried more than 350 astronauts into space. Atlantis's final liftoff marked the end of a program that inspired generations around the world.
