"The Silent Service" was a documentary style anthology TV series about the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet and their missions during World War II and the Korean War created by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who retired from the Navy in the late 1940s. Every episode was based on true historical events, with the realism of the show reinforced by the use of actual combat footage from the archives of the United States Navy. This particular episode titled “The Last Dive” is episode 27 from season 1 of the show, which aired Friday, October 4th, 1957.

Directed by Sobey Martin and written by Joseph Calvelli, “The Last Dive” featured a cast of actors which included Edward Platt, Christopher Dark, Abel Fernandez, Joy Flynn, Thom Carney, Pat Clement, Charles Braswell, Lynn Shubert, Norman Bartold, Norman Sturgis, Walter Maslow, Gil Frye, and Ken Drake. Together, this crew of actors bring to life the story of the USS Cochino, which was in service with the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949 before succumbing to a battery explosion off Norway in 1949.

Following an introduction by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers (0:34), the episode opens to the footage from August 1949 as two of the Navy’s latest snorkel-type subs, the USS Tusk and USS Cochino, conduct cold water operations in Arctic Waters. Narrator Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers explains the USS Cochino’s mission that began on August 13th, 1949 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle and introduces the sub’s crew - Lt. Cmdr. Benitez, Lt. Cmdr. Richard M. Wright, Electricians Mate First Class Oscar Martinez, and Doctor Hubert Eason among other crew members (1:22). A hydrogen leak aboard causes a battery explosion, the sub resurfaces to assess damage and what could have caused explosion (3:36). Small explosions continue as the crew cannot contain the leak and more explosions are felt aboard and a fire rages on. Simultaneously, the ship sends out distress calls to the USS Tusk but their calls go un-answered. Electricians Mate First Class Oscar Martinez locates the cause of the explosions but warns there is no way to stop another explosion from occurring (9:50). Despite Martinez’s warnings, Lt. Cmdr. Richard M. Wright enters the engine room to try and put out the fire and turn off the batteries (12:14). Lt. Cmdr. Richard M. Wright emerges from the engine room suffering from severe burns (12:47). The USS Tusk finally responds to the USS Cochino’s pleas for help, the Tusk’s crew rows medical supplies over to the Cochino (14:25). As explosions continue Lt. Cmdr. Benitez orders all hands to abandon ship onto the USS Tusk using a rope transfer (19:05). Badly burned, Lt. Cmdr. Richard M. Wright struggles to make it topside but he does eventually escape alongside the rest of the crew. Closing words by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers and interview with special guest Lt. Cmdr. Richard M. Wright (24:19).
