Today I am interviewing my sister Melanie about her publication on the last day of the Mesozoic period, which was published in the journal Nature on February 23 2022.
What exactly are the “Mesozoic” and “boreal spring”?
In the geological time scale we give names to larger and smaller periods of time, which are documented in the rocks. The three larger era’s are known as the Palaeozoic: or the era of old life, the Mesozoic, the era of the reptiles, and finally the Cenozoic, the era of the mammals. The Mesozoic encompasses three periods: the Triassic, in which the dinosaurs first emerged, the Jurassic in which they diversified greatly and finally the Cretaceous in which we end up with the famous T-Rex and Triceratops & Hadrosaurs, but these only lived in North America.
Boreal spring is spring as we know it, that means, us living at higher latitutes of the Northern hemisphere. On the equator the seasons are a lot less expressed because the angle at which the sun reaches the surface doesn’t change much during the year. On the Southern hemisphere we add “austral” to specify the seasons at higher latitutes.
So, Boreal (e.g. Northern Hemisphere) spring occurs simultaneous as Austral (e.g. Southern Hemisphere) autumn.
