The Lark (L'alouette) by Mikhail Glinka was originally a simple song for voice and piano. Russian composer Mily Balakirev (who wrote the infamously difficult "Islamey" for solo piano) transcribed it into a virtuoso solo piano showpiece. It has similarity to Franz Liszt's thematic transformation technique, where a whole piece of music is based on one or two themes that undergo transformation throughout the piece.

We're dedicating this arrangement to David Vandereyk, piano professor at Capilano University. David has invited us to play in the university's recital series many times, and we wanted to thank him by arranging a piece that he requested. Thanks, David!
My piano duet transcription retains all of the notes from the original, but divides it between the primo and secondo parts. In some sections, I added extra voices (so that all four hands are kept occupied!), but tried not to distort the original textures. 1:21-1:43 has some octave doubling for the melody
2:00 features an added tenor line doubling the melody
2:40 some passagework is embellished with parallel voices between the hands of the primo part
3:01-3:15 this section has the biggest change from the original: the primo part recalls the introductory bird calls while the secondo part retains the original texture
3:32 the climax keeps the same register changes and jumps as the original, but is now a 3-against-4 rhythm between the parts
