Pick any panoramic spot to survey the surroundings of Northern California, and Mount Shasta seems to always be the center of attention. I was almost dumbstruck just driving towards this colossus—I have never been close to a mountain of its sheer size and scale, unsurprising when you consider its status as the Lower 48’s most voluminous mountain. Despite how different the Cascades are from the Colorado Rockies, I knew the prevailing summer conditions on the Clear Creek route would make this a (very long and strenuous) walk-up akin to a Colorado Fourteener. Even though I got basically no sleep with the wind whipping my tent all night, it was very rewarding to camp on the mountainside and properly soak up my first experience in the Cascade Range. Shasta is certainly deserving of the attention!
