The Land of Smiles (1967) , the complete record with Guiseppe di Stefano (in german).
"Das Land des Lächelns" is an operetta of Franz Léhar.The story tells us about a Chinese prince who, visiting Vienna, falls in love with a beautiful Austrian girl. She follows him to China, but when the sweet honeymoon is over, she often feels left alone and so she becomes very unhappy in that strange country. With the help of a formel lover, arrived from Vienna, she escapes out of the Chinese court and turns back to her beloved home-land. Leaving behind the prince in sadness. (As opposed to most of the other operettas this one has a sad ending).
In the autumn of 1966 Guiseppe di Stefano sang for de first time in the "Theater Des Westens" in Berlin an operettarole: Prince Sou-Chong in the Land of Smiles. It was very succesfull, so he recorded this operetta in april 1967 in Vienna.
His partners were:
Mi, the Austrian girl: Dagmar Kolle,
Gustl, an Austrian servant:Heinz Holecek
Lise, a Chinese servant: Valorie Goodall.
The same cast gave stage-performances of this operetta in Canada, the United States and in Austria.
The orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper is conducted by Heinz Lambrecht.
