The gold Krugerrand is a South African gold coin that was first introduced in 1967. It was named after Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic, and the rand, the South African unit of currency. By 1980 the coin accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market.
Due to the success of the 1 oz Krugerrand, South Africa introduced fractional coins in 1980, including the 1/2 oz coin. These coins are minted in a copper-gold alloy, making them more durable than pure gold coins.
