Today we explore the intersection of classical epistemology and artificial intelligence, using the theories of 19th-century philosopher James Frederick Ferrier to evaluate machine learning.
Looking at knowledge through the traditional lens of justified true belief while highlighting the Gettier problem, where accurate information is reached through mere luck. By applying Ferrier’s view that genuine knowing requires a conscious mental relationship between a subject and an object, we argue that AI currently lacks true understanding.
Instead of possessing immediate awareness, machines operate as statistical models that manipulate symbols without experiencing the world.
Ultimately, we propose that while AI is a powerful tool for data representation, it cannot achieve the subjective handshake with reality that characterizes human intelligence.
AI was heavily used to assist in the illustration of this video, however the voice and intelligence are mine.
