In Classical Antiquity, The kithara was the large, professional ancient Greek lyre, closely associated with Apollo as the god of music, art and prophecy. Often called the Kitharoidos (lyre-singer), Apollo is depicted in art and statues holding the instrument, which was frequently used for formal musical contests, judged for their virtuosity & musicality!
