Everyone seems to agree that Edward II’s reign was a disaster. His father King Edward I, was a powerhouse and everything a medieval king needed to be. He was said to be clever, ruthless, intimidating, and was later described as “one of the greatest rulers of his time”. His son, however, was the opposite, known for spending his time “idling” with “simple people”, instead of “hearing Mass or winning battles”. He was also said to be disposed to violent outbursts and had an alarming obsession with favourites.
