My review of the 1947 novel The Killer Mine (known as Run by Night in the USA) by famed thriller author Hammond Innes.
Pryce travels to Cornwall after spending the war in Italy. He is a deserted, wanted by the police, and trapped in an illegal labour market. Smugglers want Pryce, a miner by trade, to open a mine tunnel to the sea so that they can bring in their contraband. But other factions want the mine to remain as it is so they can retrieve valuable ores. As he works, Pryce learns a terrible family secret that links him to the area. His work below ground is fraught with danger, can he survive long enough to learn the truth?
Hammond Innes was a prolific writer between 1937 and 1996. One of his other novels, The Trojan Horse, is reviewed on this channel:
