Best known as the Islamic power in Central Asia which collapsed in the face of the Mongols, the Khwarazmian Empire has a good deal of name recognition, but is rarely studied in its own right. Here, I try to contextualize the Khwarazmian Empire, trace its rise to prominence, and show why it was so vulnerable to Mongol aggression in 1219.
