Rasulullah ﷺ said that Khilafah upon the Minhaj of Prophethood would last for 30 years. This blessed period consists of the rule of the four Khulafāʾ ar-Rāshidīn:
• Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه – about 2.5 years
• Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنه – nearly 10 years
• Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه – about 12 years
• Sayyiduna Ali رضي الله عنه – just under 5 years
Together, this makes the 30 years mentioned in the hadith. After that, rule changed into monarchy and kingship.
Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah رضي الله عنه was a great Amir al-Mu’minin and among the best rulers of Islam, but he was not called a “Khalifah” in the technical sense of Khilafah on Minhaj an-Nubuwwah.
This marks the end of that golden era and the beginning of a new political phase in Muslim history, sometimes with unity and sometimes with trials.
