At some of America's most prestigious universities, wisdom doesn't only come from professors.
The Philosopher Kings follows eight custodians working inside universities including Duke, Princeton, Cornell, UC Berkeley and Caltech — people whose jobs often make them nearly invisible, but whose lives contain extraordinary stories of survival, family, loss, creativity and perseverance.
One is a Vietnam veteran who survived being shot and spent three days crawling through the jungle before being rescued. Another immigrated from Haiti and works to support his family while pursuing a dream of bringing clean water to his home village. Others share stories of broken marriages, childhood hardship, art, parenthood and the unexpected relationships they've formed with generations of college students.
Moving through classrooms, laboratories, chapels, art schools and the everyday spaces of American campus life, director Patrick Shen turns his camera toward people who are usually working after everyone else has gone home.
