Making sure your voice is heard on Election Day is important for all of us, but voting is something that especially resonates with many older adults.

“Really this election season, it’s about getting people out to vote, and use your voice at the ballot,” said Cathy MacCaul, AARP advocacy director. “Get those ballots in.”

Issues AARP is focusing on this year are social security, family caregiving and long-term care. For these issues and more, the older adult vote can make an impact. In fact, in the 2020 presidential election, the share of voters 50+ was nearly three times that of voters under 30, according to AARP.

“For older adults who vote, we know they vote, get your young friends, your family, your grandkids, your kids, make sure to remind them to vote and also to register to vote if they haven’t,” MacCaul said.

In Washington, you can register to vote online until October 28. You can also register in-person through Election Day, November 5.

MacCaul says it’s important to learn more about all candidates and initiatives on the ballot to be an informed voter.

“There’s some great resources out there,” she said. “There’s also a lot of misinformation. Don’t just rely on what you see on Facebook or X, or any of the other social media platforms, or what you hear from a friend. Double check it. Look at your voter’s guide.”

AARP also provides a variety of resources for older voters. The organization wants voters to get the facts and go vote.

“We have supported debates as an opportunity to hear from both sides,” MacCaul said. “We are a nonpartisan organization. We don’t support candidates. We don’t support PACs.”
