After World War II, Stalin moved to bring Central Europe under Moscow’s control. The Hand of Moscow examines how Soviet occupation reshaped East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.
Through eyewitness memories from people who were children or teenagers in 1945, the film recounts the arrival of the Red Army, the expulsions, shortages and the difficult years of reconstruction. From Yalta to the Berlin blockade, it shows how countries liberated from Nazism were gradually drawn into the Soviet sphere.
The film also explores the spread of Marxism-Leninism, propaganda, surveillance and fear in everyday life. In Hungary, Poland and East Germany, political parties, elections and institutions were brought under communist control.
The Hand of Moscow traces how the Iron Curtain took shape across Europe, and how life inside the Soviet bloc began.
