In this review, I’m talking about The Invite, the new A24 film directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. The film follows Joe and Angela, a married couple whose relationship is barely holding together, as they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors over for a dinner party. What starts as a simple evening slowly spirals into something funny, uncomfortable, provocative, emotionally messy, and completely unforgettable.
And honestly? This is one of the best movies of 2026.
On the surface, The Invite looks like a dinner-party comedy. But it becomes so much more than that. This is a film about marriage, insecurity, resentment, desire, honesty, comparison, and the way people perform happiness even when everything underneath is starting to crack.
Every conversation feels like it could explode. Every awkward silence feels intentional. Every laugh has tension underneath it.
That is what makes this movie so brilliant.
Seth Rogen is fantastic here, bringing that anxious, uncomfortable, human energy that makes Joe feel both hilarious and deeply sad. Olivia Wilde is incredible as Angela, giving the film emotional fire while also directing the hell out of this story. Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton are magnetic as the upstairs neighbors who walk into this dinner and completely disrupt the emotional balance of the night.
The cast is what makes the concept work.
This could have easily felt like a stagey, one-location conversation piece, but the performances keep it alive. Rogen and Wilde make the marriage feel lived-in and wounded. Cruz and Norton bring this dangerous, mysterious, alluring energy that makes you understand why this dinner becomes impossible to control.
