The history of American military aviation is defined by constant innovation, political battles, and the uncompromising demands of the battlefield. During the early years of the Cold War, the fundamental philosophy of aerial combat emphasized flying higher and faster, but the escalating threat of radar-guided surface-to-air missiles forced a radical reassessment. Decades of traditional aerodynamics were suddenly rendered obsolete by advanced enemy air defense networks. In response, the United States turned to the brilliant minds at Lockheed's Advanced Projects Division, universally renowned as the Skunk Works. Operating out of a massive World War II-era hangar in downtown Burbank, California, the Skunk Works was the brainchild of Kelly Johnson, an engineering visionary who revolutionized the aerospace industry with a strict set of fourteen operational rules designed to minimize bureaucracy and maximize technical superiority.

The pursuit of low observable technology—stealth—became the paramount objective. In August 1975, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a highly competitive endeavor known as the Experimental Stealth Testbed, inviting aerospace giants to develop an aircraft with exceptional radar-evading capabilities. Utilizing a revolutionary computer program named Echo One, Lockheed's engineers proved that a three-dimensional aircraft built entirely from flat panels, or facets, could successfully scatter incoming radar energy, preventing it from returning to enemy receivers. This monumental breakthrough led to the development of the "Hopeless Diamond" model and subsequently the Have Blue prototypes.

The Have Blue program operated under a veil of extreme secrecy. To conceal the project from prying eyes and hostile satellites, early engine runs were conducted with the aircraft parked between two semi-tractor trailers beneath a sprawling camouflage net. With a pivotal ten million dollar investment—requested at a time when the corporation flirted with bankruptcy—the Skunk Works delivered an aircraft that possessed a radar cross-section orders of magnitude lower than anything else in the world. When Have Blue completed its initial flights, successfully validating its complex aerodynamics and low acoustic signature, it definitively proved that very low observable (VLO) tactical aircraft could be successfully manufactured and operated. This foundational testing paved the way for the ultimate tactical strike aircraft, a machine that would forever alter the balance of global airpower.
