A note about RKWatson's response - inviting a single woman back to a hotel room when you haven't had the opportunity to speak to this person for the entire conference in a non-group situation could be sexual, romantic, or platonic attraction - it could even be awestruck fanboy - but what it is NOT is a feminism 101 definition of objectification, since his frame of mind is not at all known, and we are told nothing about whether he rode the elevator specifically to be with her and then turned around and went back down, or whether he continued on to his room.

Lastly, I'd just like to once again make the point that no matter how statistically likely or unlikely the average male is to be wanting to proposition someone, this says nothing whatsoever about whether a given male IS OR IS NOT actually hitting on someone. Make your decision defending yourself based on statistics and intuition and caution and whatever else you need to to stay alive, that's just intelligent - but make your response to another person based on what you actually know about that person.
