An exclusive entry into the archive. The never before seen, unsold pilot for the game show: The Impostors.
Here's the story from the man who made it:
"I wanted to do a hidden camera show with ordinary New Yorkers pretending to be something they're not. I had produced the practical jokes for Dick Clark in 1990 so I knew how to do hidden camera shows.
It's not a great show but I had no staff and flew to New York alone.
Landed on Thursday, I had made deals with a tour bus company and other locations before leaving.
I met the small production staff at FX and the crew. None had done a hidden camera show. So we worked out all the locales and I set up a feasible schedule.
The contestants were just random people we found walking in the streets of New York. No real briefing didn't need it. Hiding camera and microphones was a pain. Everyone had fun except for one person in the episode.
The Auto Mechanic was first at. Was about an hour and then struck and loaded for the next shoot.
Then went to Central Park West in front of the Plaza where we met the tour bus and headed down Fifth Avenue.
Then it's almost 4 PM. I'm at the Flat Iron Building and set up the Hot Dog Competitors. Shot for about an hour and a half.
Then it began to get dark. Maybe 6:30 PM. I set up cameras at an indoor, high end tennis club. Shot the bit, struck, loaded everything into the van and headed to New Jersey because there were no male Strip Clubs in New York.
Took the tapes and did a quick paper edit.
Woke up next morning and went to the editing bay to cut the pilot.
Sweetened it with some pre-existing music (Bee Gees, Beatles, Springsteen, ect). Then headed back to Los Angeles.
FX liked the show but because it was independent and not made by a major studio, they didn't go out of their way to put it on the air. Even though they had very little original programming at that time.
It's been 25 years since anyone has seen this.
This is the only thing I ever Created, Wrote, Produced, Directed, Edited and Voiced. I can't believe how well directed it actually ended up being."
