When people recognize something as truly “evil” (not just disliked or illegal, but genuinely wrong), they are assuming there is a standard of goodness that is more than personal preference or cultural agreement. The idea is that if evil actions were only matters of opinion, then calling something “evil” would just mean “I don’t like this” or “my society disapproves of this.” But in everyday moral judgment, people usually mean something stronger: that the action is wrong regardless of what anyone thinks.
